An improved algorithm for PMU assisted islanding in smart grid

Abstract:In case of a cascading failure, the power grid splits into uncontrolled islands before descending into blackout. Intelligent islanding is an important method to reduce the risk of blackout by preventing propagation of disturbance to other part of the system. Phasor measurement units are now integral part of a power system are very effective in detection of islanding. This paper presents an algorithm for power system intentional islanding to avoid the propagation of faults to healthy sections of the network in case of disturbances by using the synchrophasors measurement. The proposed algorithm has wider applicability and performs better in terms of network observability.
